About
Vic High Reads is in its second year. It is inspired by CBC's Canada Reads -- an annual event designed to build reading culture by inspiring Canadians to read and talk about a shortlist of "must-read" Canadian books.
Vic High Reads aspires to these goals but applies a different structure than Canada Reads. Instead of individuals defending a title each week, classes choose a title to defend over the course of a semester, which culminates in a school-wide Battle of the Books/Showdown assembly. At that time, each class has three minutes to convince the audience that their book should be Vic High's book of the year -- and that their presentation deserves an honor as a best presentation.
The Top Shelf student book club, teacher-librarian, and English Department put together this year's shortlist of 12 books. This year's theme is Canadian authors. The selection process took a full semester and was especially challenging since there are so many excellent Canadian titles; this shortlist represents what our teams believe to be the "must-reads" for our school community.
